Wedding Guest Outfit Ideas for You and Your Plus One

July 13, 2015

Well, summer is definitely here and that means that wedding season is in full swing. With each wedding invite, I deliberate over what I am going to wear. As if that wasn’t enough to figure out, my boyfriend always comes to me to help him decide what to wear as well. I have to admit, I am a bit out of my element when it comes to menswear, but I have been trying to learn a bit more about it in the last couple years. One thing I definitely try to do when dressing myself and him is to figure out how to coordinate our outfits so we at least compliment each other without looking too matchy-matchy. Here’s a few times I think I succeeded in getting the well-dressed couple thing right:

I recently discovered Paul Fredrick, which is a great men’s brand that has some classic, quality pieces for men for reasonable prices. One thing I really liked was that they have tons of dress shirts in different colors and patterns, so it makes coordinating with your date so much easier. If you too find it challenging to dress yourself and your wedding date, read on for a couple tricks I have found simplify the process of figuring out what to wear:

Think complimentary, not matchy

One thing I think looks really great for couples is to wear complimentary colors. I love yellow and blue together because those two colors seem to just make each other pop. This look is a bit more preppy, so it is perfect for an East coast wedding. Also, I have to say, I love a man in a suit, but a seersucker suit?! Maybe its the Southern girl in me, but I just think there is nothing more perfect for summer.

H M short dress, $31 / Wool pants / 2-Ply Cotton Gingham Spread Collar Button Cuff Dress Shirt / Leather shoes / Chinese laundry shoes / Blue purse, $25 / Michael kors jewelry, $355 / Lydell NYC drop earrings / Kate spade jewelry / Textured Solid Woven Silk Tie / Seersucker Suit Styles for Men | Paul Fredrick / Brushed Metal Engraveable Cufflinks
Add some personality
Have a little fun, and add some whimsical touches with your accessories. These two outfits incorporate the same colors, but they stand out because of the little details. I have to say those ice cream cone cufflinks have me wishing I could wear cufflinks, which is something I never thought I would say. These looks are on the lighter side, so they would work great for a daytime wedding.

Keep the vibe similar
If you are lucky enough to be headed to a destination or beach wedding, the key is to keep things breezy. Most destination/beach weddings are low key, so linen is a great option for the guys. Skip the dress shoes and opt for nicer sneakers or boat shoes. Depending on the level of formality (or lack thereof), sandals could even work. The same principles apply to the ladies. I love a maxi dress for a beach wedding, it works for the daytime, but also provides more coverage for a chillier night by the water. Even though these colors don’t perfectly match, they are still a great pairing because they’re in the same color family, and both have that beachy sort of feel to them.

The couple that patterns together stays together
Ok, don’t quote me on that. But, I do like how a pattern is what makes these two looks cohesive. These outfits could work for many different types of weddings. I am a huge fan of black and white with pops of red, so why not apply that same love to your plus one?
