One Day in Florence: What to Do, Eat, See, and Wear

July 18, 2016

IMG_1686

Sundresses are my go-to for beating the summer heat, and this was especially true throughout my trip to Europe. While Paris was a bit more chilly, summer was alive and well throughout my adventures in Italy. We only had one day in the city of Florence, but it was a beautiful and warm one! I couldn’t have thought of anything better than this sundress and hat to keep me comfortable and shaded all day long. I honestly don’t have too much more to say about this outfit, because I am way more excited to talk more about my day in Florence! I never expected that I would enjoy my time here as much as I did, so I think that’s what made this day of my trip truly special.

My stay in Florence was unfortunately very short, as I did not expect to fall completely in love with it as I did. If I could do it again, I would’ve stayed another day because I really do not feel as though I fully got to experience Florence to its full potential. When you visit Florence, it is easy to see how all the great master Renaissance artists like Michelangelo, Donatello, among so many others were so inspired and created the masterpieces they did here.

We started the day heading to the Duomo, but got a bit sidetracked when we stumbled upon this awesome vintage store. They have an incredible selection of designer vintage clothing, like these gorgeous vintage scarves.

IMG_9979

I managed to find two pieces in the ten Euro bin that were awesome finds! Definitely check out Street Doing if you’re in Florence!

The Duomo is an absolute must see when you are visiting Florence. Pictures really don’t do justice to just how beautiful and incredibly massive this church really is. Making the climb to the top of the dome is an awesome experience, but make sure that you buy skip the line tickets, otherwise you will waste half your day waiting in line to go up. You can either buy your tickets online here or you can just go into their box office which is a couple blocks away from the entrance to the church. I’m not quite sure where that is, but if you ask an employee standing near the entrance, they can point you in the right direction. This ticket is awesome because it not only lets you skip the line to climb the Duomo, it also gives you admittance to the Museum, Baptistry, Cathedral, and the Bell Tower.

Just so you know, climbing to the top of this church is not for people who are claustrophobic! At times, the stairs get very narrow and very steep. Clearly the people who planned this out hundreds of years ago weren’t anticipating massive amounts of tourists going up and down these stairs.

The view from the top of the Duomo is just breath-taking. It really gives you a great view over the entire city and the rolling Tuscan hills beyond.

IMG_0066After climbing the Duomo, one thing is certain: you deserve some gelato! There was a great bar directly in front of the exit of the Duomo where we stopped to enjoy some Rosato and gelato.

Next, we were on the hunt for the Statue of David. After all, you can’t visit Florence and not see him right? After a couple wrong turns, we found the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. This is another situation in which you would be wise to buy your tickets in advance. As we arrived there 45 minutes before closing, we did not experience long lines, but it doesn’t hurt to have your tickets in advance as at this is one of the most iconic pieces of art in Florence.

To finish off our one day trip to Florence, we went to the famous La Giostra restaurant. A friend of mine recommended eating here, saying it was one of the best meals of her life, so of course I had to try it! Definitely make a reservation on their website well in advance, as this place is always busy! I loved this restaurant from the start because they bring you prosecco to sip on as you wait for them to prepare your table. The menu was a bit overwhelming as it is completely in Italian, but the waiters are awesome at helping you pick something delicious to eat.

To sum it all up, Florence is just incredible. Don’t make the mistake I did, give yourself more than one day to take it all in, you won’t regret it!

I agree that one day is not enough for Florence, but it looks like you were able to do a lot in the limited time you had!

    Very romantic Holiday !

“But sudden was the newborn day reveal’d:
A maiden came, in heavenly bright array,
Like the fair creatures of the poet’s lay
In realms of song. My yearning heart was heal’d…”
