Spring 2016 Trend Report

Β springtrendsThe signs are all here: longer days, flowers in bloom, the lack of need for heavy layers…spring is around the corner! If you are like me and are ready to pack your winter stuff away and update your wardrobe for spring, you definitely will want to stay tuned.

The 2016 runways were full of some really exciting designs, but I have compiled what I believe are the top 6 trends to try this season. So without further ado, here are the trends to watch for this coming spring…

BOUDOIR
Let me just begin by saying that I looked at a LOT of spring shows to research this post. I can’t tell you how many designers decided that sending their models down the runway sans bra was the thing to do, but I feel like if you were to pick a hashtag for the the Spring 2016 shows as a whole, it would be #freethenipple. That being said, the boudoir trend is huge this year. I’m talking slip dresses, lacy camisoles, corsets, and all manner of lingerie inspired pieces. While this might work wonderfully on the runway, this trend could be a little more challenging to actually pull off. If this trend scares you a bit, try mixing these very lacy, satin-y pieces with something more substantial, like a silky camisole under a blazer with jeans.

PRIM AND MAYBE NOT SO PROPER
Moving on from the lingerie trend is perhaps something on the other side of the spectrum: fashion that seems to be inspired by high-born British ladies. To me, these pieces give me a Downton Abbey vibe but with a modern twist. They might seem stuffy at first, but by incorporating higher hemlines, sheer details, and whimsical elements, these are definitely appropriate for 2016. This trend is all about lady-like details: think ruffles, lace, and soft pastel colors.

NEOBOHO
Boho style is something that I think will never quite go out of style, but I think it gets an update every year or so. This year, dressing boho isn’t so much about suede and fringe and turquoise. Although that stuff is still awesome, this boho is a little less hippie, and a little more eccentric and romantic…does that make any sense? In any case, I am in love with this look which should come as no surprise because I just love the breeziness and effortlessness of boho style.

GRAPHIC AND SPORTY
If you’ve been following fashion the last couple years, it should come as no surprise that sportswear’s place in fashion is still going strong. Anoraks, sweatpants, track pants, letter man jackets…all of em’ are fair game for your sartorial fitness needs, both in and out of the gym. Start small and pair a sweatshirt with a pencil skirt, or take a risk and wear that sweatshirt a long, flowing maxi skirt instead.

POWERPLAY
Another big trend this spring is all about channeling your inner #girlboss. I’m talking matching suit sets, strong shoulders, pinstripes, and so many blazers. This look screams power, so taking pieces that you might have thought were only reserved for a boardroom and incorporating them into your everyday wardrobe will definitely have you feeling a little more bossy, in a good way.

OFF THE SHOULDER

You could say that 2016 is the year of the shoulders. Off the shoulder styles were pretty popular last year, but this year they were all over the runways. This is good news for just about everyone, as showing off your shoulders is a pretty universally flattering look. Grab some awesome duster earrings and your shoulders will be on display in the best possible way.
